We don’t tell our pregnant friends everything, not because we don’t think they can take it, not because we don’t think they’ll believe us, but because it hurts to relive it and it’s easier to joke about sleepless nights than to go into details about how hard it really is.

Reversible causes of dementia include the side effects of many medications. Ditropan is only the most recent addition to the list, occasioned in part by a study by U.S. Navy neurologist Dr. Jack Tsao involving 870 men and women with an average age of 75. The subjects, who were all Catholic priests, nuns and brothers, were followed for almost eight years. At a 2008 meeting of the American Academy of Neurology, Dr. Tsao reported that those who were taking anticholinergic drugs — a class that includes not only Detrol but also drugs to treat hypertension, asthma and Parkinson’s disease — had a 50 percent higher rate of cognitive decline than those who were not.

THE DAILY BLONDE: The Luck of the Irish?

I am not Irish? Come on, now. I have freckles. Freckles mean I’m Irish, right? I also like cabbage and corned beef. Come to think of it, I eat anything put in front of me, so that doesn’t really mean much. But I have freckles. Not as many as my little auburn haired daughter, but I have them. I also buy Lucky Charms (because they are magically delicious) and I believe in pots of gold at the end of rainbows. Just haven’t located the rainbow yet.

Down with Facebook!

For the five or six Amish shut-ins who may not yet have heard of this scourge (your tenacious ignorance is to be admired, and I’d immediately friend you if I was into Facebook and you had electricity), Facebook is an online community where colleagues, friends, long-lost acquaintances, friends of friends or long-lost acquaintances, and perfect strangers find and “friend” each other based on their real or perceived
affinity. They then have access to each other’s web pages, and
consequently to each other’s lives, quirks, photos, jottings,
oversharings, and mental disorders, as well as to those of the
ever-expanding universe of their friends’ circles, thus increasing the likelihood that you will either embarrass yourself or be embarrassed by someone whose life would never otherwise intersect with yours. (Right about now, a Facetard is ginning up an angry letter to the editor saying this would not be the case if you know how to control your privacy settings. Save the geek speech for your Facebook friends, Facetard, I already got my eight hours sleep.)

Who would think that a bunch of flowers would cause a lot of trouble? Unfortunately, that’s what happened to a man who sent some flowers to his girlfriend.

Leroy Greer, a car salesman from Texas, called 1-800-Flowers and asked them to send a dozen long-stemmed red roses to his girlfriend with a note that read, “Just wanted to say I love you and you mean the world to me.” He asked the company to keep his purchase private.

It was a sweet thing to do. The flowers were delivered as promised and 1-800-Flowers sent Greer a thank you note out of courtesy.

But Greer happens to be married and the note was read by his wife. She phoned the company who gave her a copy of the receipt from Leroy’s secret purchase. When she learned Greer had a girlfriend, things got crazy.

“The couple was already going through what Greer’s attorney described as an amicable divorce. After learning of the affair, Greer’s wife asked for a $300,000 divorce settlement in addition to child support, said Kennitra Foote, Greer’s attorney,” according to Scott Michels of ABC News.

“That thank-you note is going to cost him money,” Foote said.

In retaliation, Greer sued 1-800 Flowers for $1 million for breach of contract and deceptive practices. He claims that the company violated its privacy policy by sharing his personal information with a “third party.”

“This is not a moral issue. The issue is, is 1-800-Flowers in the business of causing divorce or are they in the business of sending flowers and sticking to their privacy policy?” Foote said.

“In fairness to poor Leroy, 1-800-Flowers does appear to have made a mistake. He explicitly asked them not to send anything to his home, and they assured him that wouldn’t happen. If his account is accurate, they proffered a service – discretely delivering flowers – and they failed to deliver,” added Noah Oppenheim of MSNBC.

No one knows what happened afterwards or if the case prospered. But this story should serve as a warning to two-timing romantic husbands.

What kind of stories am I going to tell here? Well how about the time a thought I’d blinded our oldest daughter? (Honest it has a happy ending.) How about the Christmas when we’d not to kindly told my sister not to get us a puppy because we didn’t want to be tied down that much. It was around New Years that we came to realize we were pregnant with aforementioned daughter #1.

Maybe I’ll manage to share a little wisdom in amongst it all. After all, all four kids are well on their way to adulthood, Gale and I are still on speaking terms most days, and I haven’t feared homelessness being around the next corner in quite some time. All that has got to count for something beyond dumb luck, doesn’t it?

Speaking of homelessness and such things, we live in such turbulent times, don’t we? I figure I’ll be commenting on some of the goings on and how they relate to family life. I am so grateful I didn’t have to grow up right now. The prospect of dating these days would be enough to have me considering a monastic existence.

So welcome aboard. Tomorrow the crazy train takes off for parts unknown. Never mind the clearly laid out track set before us.
